Designing with your fish tank aquarium

Here is a snip bit i found while looking at the latest aquarium news. Interesting to see how your tish tank can become art in no time.

St. George may not be close to the ocean but it’s still possible to enjoy the beauty of tropical fish. All it takes is an aquarium. From small, freestanding tanks to massive, built-in features, there are a variety of ways to design with fish.

Tracy Evans’ philosophy on designing with fish is right in the name of the aquarium store he owns with his wife, Wendy. The Living Art Aquarium is located at 1055 W. Red Cliffs Drive in Washington City. It specializes in saltwater aquariums. “If you see a properly designed reef aquarium it truly is living art,” Evans says...

Southeast water drought

ATLANTA (AP) - With drought conditions intensifying across the Southeast, efforts to conserve water are popping up everywhere - even at the aquarium.

In the name of conservation, the Georgia Aquarium, home of the world's largest fish tank, has emptied some of its watery displays. The downtown Atlanta attraction has drained a lake in an atrium, turned off a waterfall and nearly emptied a moat at an exhibit, refilling it with sand.

The aquarium isn't alone: A water salute to retiring pilots at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport also has been put on hold.

The efforts are some of the most unusual as the state contends with one of the worst droughts in its history. Georgia already has banned virtually all outdoor water use and ordered public water utilities to cut back water use by 10 percent.

Fish tank aquarium providing a relax feel

Most people who have fish tanks enjoy nature. Or they went scuba diving and saw what a pretty world that is and they want to relive that experience in their house," Coker says. "A fish tank puts your soul at ease."
The fish not only add color, they have their own personalities, too. "Do your research before picking out fish," says Coker who adds that selecting the fish can be a family affair that is educational as well as entertaining. "Go to the pet store with your kids and get a fish for $20 instead of going to a movie."
Feed your fish daily, if you can, Coker says. "They're the ultimate pets. You don't need a dog sitter if you go out of town."
While he does the required maintenance for a number of clients, many opt to do the work themselves because they find it relaxing, like caring for a garden. Most tanks need to be cleaned every three to four weeks.
When it comes to choosing the location, a fish tank should go wherever people spend the most time in their home "The tank will often take the place of a TV," Coker says. Finished basements, workout rooms, living rooms and libraries are among the more popular settings. One of his clients has a fish tank on either end of an entertainment center flanking a TV.
For those on a tight budget, Coker says you can save money on filtration, but don't skimp on water flow and lights. Fill the tank with gravel and cement for cost savings. Flower pots are another affordable option. Just be sure to avoid copper or anything else that oxidizes. "Your creativity can take you anywhere," says Coker, who adds that many fish aficionados score tanks at garage sales and trade coral and more.
"People start out thinking they like the fish more. But in the end they like the coral, which comes in crazy colors like bright red, purple, green and blue," Coker says. "A coral reef tank is a complete environment inside your house."
Lastly, Coker says, "If you do decide to take the plunge, make sure it's something you want to do. Having a fish tank brings the family together and creates a respect for nature. Taking care of a tank is a good analogy for how you should treat the world."
